THE Monomark, or Monotele. If you cannot do it, then you are stuck forever changing leads before changing edges. It's that simple..really. And it's awkward for 95% when first trying. You can still do Oldschool Tele if you can't Mono, but the Monomark allows for much snappier turns (there's no delay by waiting for the lead change to happen) and it allows you to decide EXACTLY WHERE you want the lead change. The truth is you only need to be able to MONO into the fall-line BUT doing it fully turn-to-turn is a great exercise. Wider skis and active bindings make it much easier. The balance requires very subtle edge pressure control changes. I have always found that I control the movement from the rear boot pressure mostly, at least when I do it fully turn-to-turn. Start on easy, smooth slopes!

You're right, Monomark is essential to modern Telemark. I also steer from the rear when practicing it.

It seems really awkward at first but if you just start by doing it to the fall-line and back, it will be much easier doing full Monomarks eventually. Great edge control practice. It's also really good for helping beginners to stop crossing their ski tips or for reducing and eliminating stemming.

When flying fast down a deep powder shot I will sometimes throw in a monomark as a quick speed check. A cheater turn if you will. then right back into sequence.
