TurnS, because there are basically 2 versions, the single and the 2-step. Single, step into it and slide (as in Christy) or pivot the trailing ski in from the tip of the trailing ski (keep tip down, only lift the tail).
Whether using the Single or 2-step, you step UP in the traverse to start. If you try and step down, you will make a fumbling mess of it all. Tele 2-step. No one does it better.

Learning and teaching. The most common mistake/issue is finishing by lifting the trailing ski by the tip which throws the skier back- and often on their ass. One might argue that it's easier balance to leave the tip at least just touching the snow.

A great and time-proven useful skill. Are the step variations often needed on "modern" Tele gear? No, not really, but no good Telemark skier does not master them and use as needed. And alpine style step turns on Tele gear are also very valuable and at times more stable even.

Is this 2 step turn Japanese style?

^^^^It's just common Step Telemark done about anywhere, though the skier makes the mistake of lifting a ski with the tip pointed UP one time which is a big no-no Tele or alpine style. Also TELEHIRO has his own twist/style re Step Telemark. Notice how he raises the arm before planting the pole and notice how he weights the pole and pivots around it. He uses 3 points of balance and it's a very slow maneuver. He teaches his Step Telemark for very steep and difficult skiing.

Here's another segment of a clip of Telehiro's (I have never seen anyone else execute it quite this way) Telemark Step Turn variation. Very useful- especially on lighter gear- on difficult, irregular snow and/or steep ground.

The exaggerated lifting of the pole is something specific to Telehiro. I think he uses it to emphasize a very definite weight shift to that new outside ski and also he does pivot on the pole .

^It's always been a bit vague to me as well. Obviously you do not have to raise the pole up like that to do a Telemark 2-step but , like you say, he pivots around the pole.

Here's an odd one. He Calls it the Telemark 1-2. He steps into half a lead change and the slides the trailing ski back to finish the change. I really see little point in it. Sometimes it differs very little from a stemmed or Christie Tele, sometimes he seems to step the trailing ski and sometimes there's not much stem, if any, to it.. Nothing much new.
