Not sure what OG is....Mostly skied Mt. Hunger....That had 1000 or so of great big hardwoods but the ice storm of 1998 blasted them....@2300 verts....Flagg is in Wheelock....that was a great ski but the WHIPS!!!!!!! Figure I will try to get the Boys to try again this year....Who knows if there is a decent way....Wait for a sunny Feb. day and temps in the high 20's....Get slapped up by the whips and get a sunburn at the same time....Supposed to head off somewhere soon and Telekid is in charge...Been a very cold Winter so far with no temp above 32o for weeks now....Same old as we have had powder from a month ago that keeps on giving.....TM

Take the turn left just past where the spinning dog used ti live to get to the wheellock trail head. I lived in Worcester and earlier on the west side of that hunger mtn range, and we’all skied the mountains there. Only potential old growth I have seen is the yellow birch anchored in the rocks up near the krumholz

OG is the name of the thread... I hear a lot about the ice storm of 98 - I don't think it affected us much in lower/western NY. The one I recall being particularly bad happened when I was much younger, maybe around 90 or so - I'd need to look that up. I went PSC in 98, but I would have been there in winter 98-99, so I think the ice storm was the winter prior. I smoked a lot of dope, but I think I would have remember that Apparently that storm destroyed a number of trees in the Adirondacks as well. Most of the old yellow birches still persist, AFAIK.

I just recently found out about some 400 acres of old growth not far from me. Red and white oak upwards of 250 years. The City of Rochester used to own this land and tried to secretly log it in 2002. Locals found out and had a fit, and the city put a moratorium on the logging. During that time, somehow, the land was transferred to the state. I looked through the management plan and they make no mention of preserving this land and they do mention plans to log in the future. I know they logged one section of these lands about 8 years ago, but I don't think it was the old growth. There's plenty of plantation timber on these lands too that needs to be thinned. Anyway the only areas I see protected from logging are the wetlands. I need to investigate and see what the deal is here. Those trees should be put into "forest preserve". I found out these trees are "preserved" there's a hold on logging these lands but it's subject to review every 10-15 years or so. I also talked to a local ecology professor and he said they aren't necessarily old growth, but "persistent" growth. I'm not entirely sure what that means. Perhaps it means they were selectively logged very long ago. They may not be as old as claimed - he said he's never cored any up there. At any rate, they are not easy to get at and are on steep slopes, which violates a couple requirements for current DEC logging practices. I think they'll be safe. I need to go take a hike out there and see what the forest looks like and see what's in the understory.

Gt is busy celebrating the Orange Hero's latest act of treason (hoping to aquire sedition fodder). Nothing so low that Orange Idiot will not do it for the attention that comes with shockingly stupid acts. While most of the world is at war with the civilian-murdering Putin, Orange Asshole begs him to find and release dirt on Biden(s). What a gem!

Gt is out of jail here but silent. He's filling the diary at Ttalk with news of sugaring and a skiff of white which may lure him to the pasture on the mighty E99's! It may have dawned on him that while Biden is for sure not Putin's buddy, Trump is clearly that murdering terrorist's beatch. That would ( should be) be a huge and embarrassing revelation but Gt has a gift of just shrugging off fact that is contrary to whatever narrative he writes.
